Few years back I read this
story by Sidney Sheldon with
the title of "Master of the
game". The lead character
"kate" is shown as a very
ingenious and canny woman, who takes every step very
prudently, and sees beyond
the sights. Thus, as the story
unfolds, the reader is forced to
admire the genius of the
character shown. If we put a glance on contemporary
politics of Pakistan, there is
only one 'master of the
game', and he (Yes "he",
because "she" was killed) is
undoubtedly the best one of all times so far. Few of us know that Zardari
was not (as he pretends)
accidentally brought into
politics—it was always his
dream, and he must have
loved it more than anything. He tried his luck first in 1983
by participating in an election
for a district council seat in
Nawabshah; the same
Nawabshah where his family
owned thousands of acres of farmland. Apparently his win
was certain, but he lost, and
instead of getting reckless
with rage, he remained calm.
He embraced the fact that
politics required more from him, and from that day
onwards he spoke less and
pondered more. He did
miracles with his mind, with
the first one being his
marriage with the most powerful political figure in the
country. I always used to
mess with my limited nerves
that how could Benazir marry
a person like Zardari. Now I
realize that it was upside down: Zardari married
Benazir! During the Benazir
Governments, he enjoyed the
most powerful positions,
including the chief of
intelligence bureau and head
of FIA. From the very first day, he faced high level
corruption charges. So,
whenever his name comes,
we have the all the "French"
ready for him. I've a
different perception of the matter, however. I see a man
who was so clever that he got
elected as a member of
National assembly and Senate
while in jail. It was his
wizardry that albeit the deep seated antagonism of
intelligence and establishment,
he is still one piece. Law,
weapons, finance, backdoor
channels; all defeated by a
single brain! A normal man would
succumb to the circumstances
if he is imprisoned for several
years. Zardari was however
extra sturdy. He was already
in jail in 1998, when he and BB (on self imposed exile back
then) were sentenced a five
years of jail each, but it didn't
shatter him. The series of
assaults continued after the
Nawaz Sharif era, but Zardari succeeded in a give and take
with Musharaf. He flew to
Dubai in 2004. It was time to
play again! In 2007, the world witnessed
the most brilliant political
moves ever. By chance (or by
endeavor), he got his big
break after the Rawalpindi
incident. As Co-Chairman of the largest political party
(which was a controversy in
itself, but he tackled it
flawlessly) his first clever
proceeding was the tie with
PML(N): the party that made him suffer for so long. Nawaz
Sharif, despite of his extended
political experience, was too
amateur to apprehend the
move. All the critics salute
Zardari for how he defiled PML (N) by stepping on Sharif's
head and becoming the
President of Pakistan in Sep,
2008. He then faced the biggest
media trial in the history of
the country, and his position seemed very fragile, but he
not only survived that, but
also got hold of the reins of
the events. Today he is more
stable and powerful than
ever. So, there he lives in the
President house. Media wants
him dead, Supreme Court
wants him trialed, Army
wants him exiled, opposition
wants him to bring back the loot, and masses want him
overthrown. Every day,
there is a new accusation, a
new plan to remove him. But
they have all failed before,
and they will all fail now. Because, it is Zardari they are
dealing with. . . . . and
Zardari sees beyond the sights!."
